‘The Threesome’

Absolutely in love with Chad Hartigan’s The Threesome, a situational rom-com of the fullest extent and most evolved potential. Begins as you’d expect but takes some surprising & entertaining turns, transforming in a refreshingly mature way that’s endearing, emotional & entirely sincere.

Spent most of the runtime either with a smile on my face or cringing in horror. Big hearted swings grounded with beautiful emotional payoffs, paired with consistent laugh out loud moments. Hilarious, heartfelt & oh so messy, heavy on that last one, which just adds to the genuine authenticity, these are real people in a real situation just trying to figure it all out!

This was everything I wanted and so much more, balances so many tones expertly while managing to bring its own unique voice to an otherwise fairly repetitive genre. I gotta say though, none of this would work without the all star cast. Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King & Ruby Cruz are simply magnificent. 

I laughed, I cried, I cheered, an irresistible delight that instantly won me over. Damn near perfect.

‘Clown in a Cornfield’

Slasher fans rejoice! Clown in a Cornfield is easily one of the best the genre has seen in years. A new killer, a new generation of teens dying in crowd-pleasing ways, and the perfect amount of meta commentary to feel fun & fresh. Brutal kills, sharp humor, tons of heart & an extremely timely message at its core. This thing rips, full stop. This played like freakin gangbusters at the world premiere, some of the most thunderous reactions I’ve heard in a theater and whew boy is it deserved. A nonstop rollercoaster that starts off as your typical whodunit slasher, and just when you’re lulled into the classic rhythm…BOOM. It takes a lot of ingenuity & expertise to create something audiences haven’t seen in the horror genre, especially when it comes to slashers, but Eli Craig, Adam Cesare & co. have breathed life into what’s slowly becoming a dying breed. ‘Cannibal Mukbang’

Cannibal horror has had quite the uproar recently, and Aimee Kuge’s directorial debut Cannibal Mukbang is a very welcome addition to the grotesque phenomena. Trashy, sexy and drenched in buckets of gore & viscera. Feels like something ripped straight out of 80’s capital B exploitation cinema, and I mean that as the highest of compliments. Frank Henenlotter, eat your heart out. For a debut feature, it has such an expertly nuanced portrayal of infatuation, sex & revenge, told ferociously through an extremely stylish and poignant lens. So thematically rich with a real give-no-fuck attitude. I was instantly charmed. Aimee’s vision is unmatched, and I truly feel this is destined to become a midnight classic. One of the biggest surprises of the year and a must watch for every horror fan.
